The validation of a navigator model for use in computer aided channel design.

Real time simulator test data were used to validate the CAORF autopilot. The autopilot is designed to steer ships in a channel in the presence of passing ships. Important piloting behaviours were identified based on the observed data. The validated autopilot is able to navigate the ship to a performance level similar to human pilots. Based on the common behaviour of the test subjects, the autopilot was adjusted to represent a typical pilot. (from author's abstract)
