The development of Chinese e-book standards and platforms in Taiwan

E-book markets in Taiwan and China have developed gradually in recent years. Currently, Taiwan is promoting the e-book industry. There are advanced Chinese e-book technology developments and industrial activities, but little academic literature. This paper presents and evaluates the current status and milestones of the Chinese e-book in Taiwan. Chinese e-book standards adoption, major e-book platforms, and some content providers are included. This paper describes the development of Chinese e-book standards and platforms and finds that the EPUB has not been adopted widely as the Chinese e-book standard, and an excessive number of Chinese online e-book platforms exist. Promoting the EPUB to gain extensive adoption as the Chinese e-book standard is necessary and would benefit the development of the Chinese e-book. And the public and private sectors might consider cooperating to establish one or two Chinese-language e-books content exchange centers in Taiwan.
