During the afternoon of June 20, 1987 (TAMEX IOP 11), several convective systems formed locally over Taiwan island. The total amount of rainfall was over 90 mm in just a few hours at some stations. Precipitation was heavier in northern central Taiwan. Higher amounts of rainfall occured over sloped-areas instead of over the high mountain region. Hourly rainfall data also indicated that stations at lower elevation observed precipitation earlier than those at higher elevations. The objective of this study was to investigate these characteristics via observational data and numerical simulation. A dry version of a three-dimentional numerical model was used to simulate the flow patter in the Taiwan area under south-south-west flow.
