摘要

The development of auroral electrojets is known to be mainly, controlled by the north-south component (Bz) of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). One of the auroral electrojet indices, AL, is commonly used to monitor the westward electrojet. By studying events for which only the IMF Bz varied significantly, it is found that, for some events, AL can be reduced by a southward turning of the IMF. We interpret this reduction in the westward electrojet by the southward turning as a new electrojet response to the IMF Bz in addition to previously documented responses of the electrojets to the directly-driven process, an internal process of the magnetosphere, or a northward turning of the IMF.
