摘要

Adult stem cells are undifferentiated cells found within differentiated tissues that possess the unique ability to renew themselves and differentiate into specialized tissue cell types. Mature stem cells can exist in different tissues and organs of the body. Under certain conditions, these cells can form new stem cells or differentiate following specific procedures to form adult pluripotent stem cells (APSCs), thereby maintaining the dynamic balance of growth and aging in tissues and organs. Adult stem cells in individual adult tissues primarily exist in a dormant state under normal conditions. However, they may manifest different levels of regeneration and renewal under pathological conditions or when induced by external stimuli. Adult stem cells display several advantages in transplant therapy due to (1) their abundant supply; (2) their property to evade immune rejection and immunosuppressive agents such as histocompatibility factor is obtained from the patients themselves; (3) their low risk of carcinogenesis with little ethical concerns; and (4) their potential of multidirectional differentiation.
