N2 - The potentiometric response of poly(vinyl chloride)-valinomycin membrane-based potassium ion sensors to low-molecular-weight non-ionic alcohols was studied. The sensors were found to be sensitive to 0.1-10 mM nonan-1-ol, octan-1-ol, heptan-1-ol, hexan-1-ol, benzyl alcohol, 2-phenylethanol and 3-phenylpropan-1-ol in potassium chloride solution. On the other hand, methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol and propane-1,3-diol (up to 100 mM) had no effect on the electrode potential of the sensors. The results are discussed in terms of adsorption or penetration of alcohols on or into the membrane.
