Lognormal, normal and other distributions produced by algebraic operations in the solar wind

摘要

Linear superposition of independent and arbitrary perturbations leads to the normal Gaussian statistics according to the central theorem of the probability theory. Contrary to this, most of solar wind and interplanetary field (IMF) fluctuating parameters observed during 1963-2007 are better fitted by lognormal distributions. This can be a manifestation of the dominance of nonlinear multiplicative interactions rather than of linear superposition during the solar wind and IMF formation processes on the Sun and further structuring in the heliosphere. This idea is complementary to current paradigms of the interplanetary turbulence [1].
