Ground improvement with interlock-able plastic bottles

摘要

Global warming owing to the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions is sending a warning message to us. At this situation, any of a method, such as recycling, that can reduce the amount of the GHG emissions is of significant interest and of great benefit to our living environment. POLLI-Brick", made from 100% recycling, has been proved a successful engineering innovation in the construction of the EcoARK pavilion, which is the exhibition hall of the 2010 Taipei International Flora Exposition. It is worth noting that no safety issues were reported during EcoARK's service life. As a result, this paper aims to extend the application of such an interlock-able material to geotechnical engineering. A series of model tests were carried out with such plastic bottles installed underground as the reinforcement material. Model tests were conducted within an in-house fabricated sandbox, for realizing the bearing capacity of the ground with and without such materials installed, with the bearing capacity and ground settlement being measured during the tests.
