This paper surveys the physical properties of refractory and coating, viscosity and released latent heat of solidified A356 from literatures. These properties and data are used to simulate the filling length of A356 melt in a U-shape mold. A software (FIDAP) is adopted to calculate the filling length of A356 melt in different cavities; including sections of 2 × 2, 4 × 4 and 6 × 6mm2. Effect of binder content (sodium silicate), mold temperature and coating thickness on the filling length of A356 in the U-shape mold are discussed. The shapes of terminated filling in different sections are different and compared in this study.
