ELECTRO-MAGNETIC ACTUATION BASED DYNAMIC BALANCING OF ROTARY MACHINERY

Engineers performing field dynamic balancing for rotating machines, especially large mechanical systems like driving motors and engines in power plants or textile factories, and in the engine room of vessels with limited space, generally have to bear uncomfortable harsh noise and vibration environments. To handle the problem, this study proposed and developed an electromagnetic (EM) actuation technique to dynamically balance rotary machines that greatly reduces human intervention. The fundamental theorem of adapted influence coefficient method was derived. The proposed EM actuation approach hardly needs human intervention to add or subtract extra mass of the rotating system. To the purpose of balancing, instead, two rotary balancing plates were designated and radially grooved with a steel ball and several seats together with electrical inductors per groove. The rotary machine can be dynamically balanced through moving steel balls to their appropriate seats for a balancing state as soon as the vibration responses are measured on the bearing seats and processed to decide turning on specific electrical inductors that magnetically attract steel balls. Within this paper the synthesized case examples were designed and verified for both simulated vibration response and performance test. Further, the experimental plat-form was constructed to validate this balancing scheme under various unbalanced conditions.
