Case Study of Impact of Assimilating MetOp GPS Radio Occultation Observation on Top of COSMIC Data on Typhoon Forecast

摘要

In this study we investigate the impact of assimilating MetOp GPS radio occultation (RO) data on typhoon track forecast on top of conventional and COSMIC observation data in operational Typhoon Weather Research and Forecasting (TWRF) system run at Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau (CWB). Preliminary results of Typhoon Nanmadol (2011) and Saola (2012) show that assimilation of these additional RO data may reduce their track errors. Verification against the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) analyses shows better scores with both RO datasets assimilated. This study also suggests the need for more GPS RO data provided by new missions such as FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 to improve weather forecasting in the near future.
