abstract = "Calligraphy is one of the traditional Chinese Arts. With the technologies of multimedia, artists and scientists work together to digitize calligraphic drawings in order to preserve the historical contributions. In addition, calligraphic collections can be stored in a multimedia database, for fast retrieval and reference. To facilitate the high efficiency of calligraphy document retrieval, edge detection is one of the most important issues to enable an automatic system. In this paper, we propose a na{\"i}ve edge detection algorithm, which is very efficient in finding edges of calligraphy arts. The experimental results show that, for both calligraphic drawing and simple Chinese landscape painting, the proposed mechanism performs better then other edge detection algorithms.",
