abstract = "It is an important topic to analyze the response of lateral pile subjected to liquefaction-induced flow pressure in designing pile foundation in liquefying ground. There are two methods currently available to perform the analysis. One is the force method that uses the liquefaction-induced flow pressure as the external force acting on the pile. The other is the displacement method that imposes a lateral ground displacement profile on the pile and softens lateral subgrade reaction to analyze pile response. Both two methods can capture the pile response very well. However they are so complicated that the analyses usually have to be solved by numerical methods. Based on some reasonable assumptions, this paper presents a simplified closed form solution for the analysis. It is a combination of the solutions of an Euler's beam and an elastic lateral pile. The solution is used to analyze the case of damaged pile due to lateral spreading caused by ground liquefaction during Kobe earthquake. The calculated result by the solution agrees the field performance well.",
