N2 - Fire safety equipment can provide functions of alarming, initial fire extinguishing and refuging. Fire safety equipment reviews indicate that the design of fire safety equipment layout need to be completed and pass the government reviews before the equipment is installed to ensure its functions in a building for mitigating life and property losses. Current reviewing processes face issues such as involving complicated equipment, lacking standard reviewing protocol, and having visual restrictions of using 2D graphs. The issues result in inefficient reviewing processes and improper designs which are not discovered until construction completion, further leading to rework losses. Therefore, this research aims to facilitate fire safety equipment reviews and improve the reviewing process by applying building information modeling (BIM) technique. Expert interviews are first conducted to identify common problems encountered in a fire regulation reviewing process. Solutions to the problems are then proposed based on BIM characteristics and functionalities; a revised reviewing process is finally established. The revised reviewing process is double-checked by domain experts and verified that it can serve the purpose of reducing reviewing time, increasing reviewing scopes, and improving reviewing accuracy.
