Abstract

A modified Rational Formula approach for designing urban storm sewer system, which includes the conventional detention pond and the double detention pond, is proposed in this paper. To illustrate this approach, a typical urban storm sewer system is designed by using the modified Rational Formula with a typical design storm. This approach not only designs the sewer lines but also estimates the hydrographs. Furthermore, these hydrographs may be applied to design the conventional detention pond or the double detention pond. The results show that the double detention pond can save up to 50% of the volume compared to the conventional detention pond.
