Abstract

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is gradually shifting from traditional wired transmission to wireless access network aiming to reduce the complexity of factory wiring. Because of ongoing advancements in IIoT applications, the demanding for low latency and ultra reliability become mandatory. Thus, new industry network services such as Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) and Ultra-reliable and Low Latency Communications (URLLC) are designed. This study proposes a cost-effective solution for industrial networks by utilizing the mature Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) physical layer for IIoT data transmission. The concept is to deploy multiple pairs of BLE modules on IIoT devices and adjust the relevant operational parameters, including data transmission scheme, timer synchronization and frequency hopping mechanism, to improve the reliability and reduce the transmission delay. In order to validate the performance, we developed the whole system to ensure the packet latency is under 1ms and the error rate is less than 10-5.
