Suppression of cardiac altemans by the alternating-period feedback control

Abstract

Prolonged untreated cardiac alternans may lead to ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation or sudden cardiac death. Thus, it is important to develop an effective method for controlling alternans. In this paper, the suppression of cardiac alternans is studied using the recently proposed alternating-period feedback control scheme. Numerical simulations are performed on the Luo-Rudy dynamic (LRd) model for single cell. We showed that the action potential duration alternans and intracellular calcium alternans are significantly suppressed after the control is applied. In particular, our result suggests that the contractile force is more balanced from beat to beat after the alternans is reduced.
