Using discrete Legendre orthogonal polynomial, a technique is proposed to determine the finite-time suboptimal control for a linear time-invariant discrete system with a quadratic performance index. With this technique the optimal control problem is reduced to the solution of a system of linear algebraic equations. An advantage of the technique is that it is simple and can be easily implemented on a digital computer.
