Abstract

Gear noise and vibrations are closely related to tooth modification, loading condition, rotational speed and resultant transmission error. This study aims to investigate the dynamic behaviors of spur gears with modifications. To achieve this, spur gear models with tooth modifications were developed, including both tip-relief and longitudinal crowning modifications. The transmission error and meshing stiffness of the modified spur gears under various assembly conditions were then calculated by numerical method. Moreover, the optimum gear tooth modification parameters were computed considering the transmission errors with assembly misalignments. Finally, a dynamic model was successfully developed to investigate the dynamic transmission error of the studied spur gear pair with modifications. The resulting dynamic characteristics of the original-design and optimum-design spur gear pairs were also presented and discussed in this study.
