Shear instabilities of freely standing thermotropic smectic-A films

Abstract

The rheology of freely standing thermotropic smectic-A films under shear flow was studied. Focus was on the Couette geometry and the effects of centrifugal force. It was demonstrated that centrifugal force is capable of inducing a layer dilation close to the outer cylinder.
