RMD-Based Mode Decision for Ordered-Dithering HEVC Intra Prediction

Abstract

An ordered-dithering technique has recently been proposed to improve the coding performance of HEVC intra prediction. Although the proposed algorithm achieves average 0.5% bit rate reduction, more than 4% of computation time is required to perform the ordered-dithering scheme. In this paper, we suggest a RMD-based mode decision scheme for the ordered-dithering intra prediction to reduce its computational complexity, while still maintaining high coding performance. Two kinds of thresholds (a fixed threshold and an adaptive threshold) in the proposed scheme are investigated to reduce the computational complexity. The proposed scheme with adaptive threshold can achieve average 0.55% BDBR reduction and 2.5% time saving, compared to HEVC intra prediction.
