Abstract

Many protocols or radio access systems provide some techniques to deal with handover problems. The idea of cross-layer is proposed to facilitate handover across different layers in fast handover mobile IPv6. When FMIPv6 operation enters into reactive mode or wrong handover anticipation, it will result in significant connection disruption and packet loss. This research is focused on layer 3 handover issue based on IEEE 802.16e wireless network. We propose an architecture which uses the method of Pre-Binding Update in order to accelerate FMIPv6 operation, and also combines with 802.21 media independent handover services to avoid incorrect layer 3 handover prediction and reduce the transmission of signal. A simulation comparison with FMIPv6 over 802.16e is presented and a computational signal cost analysis is also performed to verify these different methods.
