Abstract

Four kinds of currently available Nd:hosted laser passive Q-switch and mode-locking modulators: plastic dye, LiF:F₂^- color center crystal, Cr⁴:YAG crystal and RG1000 colored glass filter were investigated. All modulators are capable of Q-switching as well as Q-switching combined with mode-locking of pulsed Nd:YAG, Nd:glass 6, Nd:YVO₄ and microNd:YAG lasers. However, the LiF:F₂^- color crystal demonstrated outstanding annealability, long lifetime, low cost and operability at high repetition rates.
