On the real-time implementation and packet loss recovery of the G.723.1 speech coder

Abstract

G.723.1 is the one of the newest standards of ITU. Because of the high quality of G.723.1, it is widely used in video-phone and internet phone systems. Furthermore, the coding standard will also be applied to the digital telephone network system. However the coding standard requires too much computational effort because of the complexity of its algorithm. In this paper, we propose some fast algorithms and apply MMX technology so that the real-time requirement can be achieved. In a packet network, speech packets may be unavailable at the receiver. Predictive type speech coders, however, incorporate filters with memories which present an extra source of degradation. Frame reconstruction strategies which cut down on the propagation of corrupted filter memories have to be adopted. In this paper, we propose a new packet loss recovery algorithm that reduces the propagation of frame lost effects to future frames and its application to the G.723.1 speech coder.
