Objects tracking and positioning using multiple active video cameras

Abstract

The main objective of the study is to provide three-dimensional (3-D) trajectories of moving objects in the object space. Two PTZ cameras are used to track the moving objects and the photogrammetric technique is employed to position the moving objects in the object space. The proposed method involves five main steps: (1) a camera calibration procedure is employed to construct the collinearity relationship between the image plane and the object space; (2) the moving objects on each PTZ camera are detected using the temporal difference method; (3) the image coordinates of the moving objects in one of the cameras can be transformed to the other camera with the aid of the collinearity relationship; (4) the epipolar geometry is used to match the moving objects on the image planes of two cameras; (5) the matching coordinates in conjunction with the space intersection technique then can be used to calculate 3-D coordinates of the moving objects in the object space. The proposed system is tested on various moving objects in an open area. The experimental results reveal that the method can successfully track the moving objects and present the 3-D trajectories of the moving objects in the object space.
