Abstract

Physical processes in the gyrotron backward-wave oscillator (Gyro-BWO) were investigated with a numerical approach which evaluates the self-consistent field profile by employing outgoing-wave boundary conditions at the open ends. It is shown that this distinctive feature substantially influences the basic properties of the gyro-BWO including the start-oscillation current, efficiency, power scaling and stability of tuning. It has an output power of 135 kW at 27% efficiency. Smooth magnetic-field and voltage tuning is also achieved with a 3 dB bandwidth of 8% and 6%, respectively.
