Abstract

Internet applications and services have become indispensable in modern life. Network faults will cause inconvenience and damage for users and network providers. However, it is a real challenge for network managers to find out the root cause and of the network fault, and recover the Internet services rapidly. In the paper a network fault diagnoses system based on multiple mobile agents is proposed, where the concept of multihoming is adopted. The proposed system is capable of diagnosing the position and cause of faults rapidly and accurately, by crosschecking through multiple network interfaces. Besides, the proposed system is implemented to detect and diagnose network faults layer by layer, according to the five-layer architecture in TCP/IP. Network managers are able to monitor and control the network status through the system at anytime and anywhere. Thus the possible causes of the network fault can be narrowed to speed up the diagnoses of network faults, and then improve the efficiency of network fault management.
