Abstract
This paper presents a Multimedia Expert System for Slurry wall construction (MESS). This paper describes how MESS was implemented; including the system architecture, the knowledge acquisition and verification process, and the incorporated hardware and software of the system. It is found that properly integrating expert systems with multimedia technology provides a number of benefits that could result in better performance of the systems: the user can easily comprehend the questions asked by the expert system; the user can capture more efficiently the knowledge represented by the system; and that the system can give vivid explanations just as they were given by real experts. In sum, MESS demonstrates that integrating expert systems with multimedia technology is a successful approach for future expert system applications in civil engineering.
