Abstract

Given the maturity of optical applications realized by heliconical structures of chiral nematics in the last few years, we propose a method to reveal the relation between various heliconical structures and the corresponding image colors. Unlike the results deduced by the free energy functional of the adopted liquid-crystal materials, the results of the proposed method show that the variations of heliconical structures depend on the modulation process of applied fields. Without using complicated/expensive techniques, such as confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, the proposed method can be easily adopted to analyze the structural information of heliconical structures.
