Abstract
The magnetic properties of polycrystalline (Sm0.58Y0.42)2CuO4 have been studied by measuring the AC magnetic susceptibility, using various strengths and frequencies for the excitation magnetic field, with and without an applied DC magnetic field. Two peaks at 11 and 225K are clearly evident in the temperature dependence of both the in-phase and the out-of-phase components of the AC susceptibility. An applied DC field strongly suppresses the peak at low temperature, which we believe is associated with the antiferromagnetic ordering of the Sm spins. The profile of the peak at high temperature, on the other hand, is strongly affected by the frequency as well as by the strength of the excitation field, indicating a spin-glass behavior, which is mainly contributed by the Cu spins.
