HQR: Hidden route aware QoS routing protocol for mobile ad hoc networks

Abstract

A new problem called the hidden route problem is introduced in this paper, which is encountered when a QoS route is to be determined in a mobile ad hoc network. We show the problem by means of an example and propose a hidden route aware QoS routing protocol (HQR for short) to avoid the problem. An analytical model is adopted to estimate the capacity and delay in the radio coverage of a node. By its aid, HQR can obtain a route for any pair of source and destination nodes with bandwidth and delay guaranteed. Neighborhood maintenance, QoS violation detection and route maintenance are also discussed. The ns-2 simulator is used to compare the performances of HQR and some related protocols. Simulation results exhibit that i) this problem causes significant performance impact, such as high end-to-end delay and low packet delivery ratio, for transmitting real-time packets. ii) HQR protocol can avoid the problem as possible as it can and improve the system performance.
