Gases for muon drift chambers at high energy hadron colliders

In search for realistic gas mixtures for drift chambers in LHC/SSC experiments, we measured the drift parameters in magnetic fields up to 0.83 T. The experimental results of the drift velocity and Lorentz angle for several candidate gases are presented. Ar:CO2 mixtures are shown to be suitable for large area muon chambers, provided small amounts of additives with high UV absorption are added. Drift parameters of CF4 based gases have also been measured in magnetic fields. These gases are useful for straw drift tubes.
