Abstract
The large area drift chambers for muon detection in SSC/LHC experiments poses new requirements for gas selection. Precision measurements of the gas properties are necessary to determine which are the proper gas mixtures to use. We present our studies on the drift properties of several candidate gases. The improvement of the sparkproofness by small amount of hydrocarbon or alcohol additives is also presented.
