Abstract

This paper reviews and evaluates structural design requirements for buried corrugated steel pipes specified in the AISI handbook and the AASHTO specifications, as well as other design considerations evolved from recent research. The emphasis of the paper is on the evaluation of the design requirements that are recommended to guard against some typical failure modes such as (1) wall crushing, (2) seam separation, (3) wall buckling, (4) excessive deflection, and (5) formation of a plastic hinge in the pipe wall. An equation was proposed for the maximum allowable deflection of buried corrugated steel pipes. The equation was based on results of extensive finite-element analyses of soil-pipe interaction and a safety factor against formation of a plastic hinge of 1. 05.
