Abstract

The basic electrochemical behavior of microfabricated thick-film platinum and gold electrodes is compared with that of conventional planar electrodes. It is found that microfabricated thick-film electrodes are electrocatalytically more active due to their higher specific surface area and porous nature. However, special attention should be paid to sealing of the current collector to prevent electrolyte from creeping beneath the seal, otherwise the electrode performance will be greatly impaired. This paper describes the experiments and results of the study.
