Effect of particle densities of binary mixtures on segregation in a vibrated granular bed

Abstract

The segregation phenomena of binary mixtures with size differences and density differences were experimentally studied in a vertical vibrated granular bed. The larger particles tend to move upwards in the shaker in a certain range of vibrational accelerations. The segregation effect could be enhanced if the larger particles have the greater material density than the smaller particles. The segregation coefficient was measured and found to increase with the vibrational acceleration until reaching a maximum and then to decrease with the acceleration.
