Design of battery swap system for electric scooter

Abstract

This study proposes a solution to improve the charging problem on conventional electric scooter. In the past, the user of the electric scooter has to spend long time to wait the battery full-charge when the battery is in low capacity. The convenience and driving rang are restricted by the long charging time and low capacity. Here a novel battery swap system is presented to solve the inconvenience problems for electric scooters. The swap system includes radio frequency identification (RFID) card reader and an operating window to build a human-machine interface with payment mechanism. This study has designed nine charging modules to auto-charge the battery of low capacity in the system. The charging module is mainly consisted of a buck converter with synchronous rectification and a microcontroller. The each module has a two-stage CC/CV charging method which combined a constant-current (C.C.) and constant-voltage (C.V.) mode. Besides, the system also includes a control core circuit which is to link the humanmachine interface and each charging module to control and monitor the whole swap procedures. If the charging module has some abnormal states, the swap system will auto-transmit the corresponding error to notify the control center by wireless communication. In this system, a battery pack swap takes the end-user around one minute to finish the completed swap procedure. Therefore, this solution could improve the problem of energy supply in electric scooters.
