Convection patterns on the liquid-liquid interface of a phase-separated binary mixture

Abstract

Propagating surface deformation in the form of a ring is observed on the liquid-liquid interface of a phase-separated binary mixture in a cylindrical cell after a temperature quench close to the critical point. It is found that the ring is produced by the convection currents induced by the temperature quench and it expands with a nearly constant velocity of the order of 10 mm/s. A peculiar feature of this characteristic velocity is that it is relatively insensitive to experimental parameters and probably governed by the bulk properties of the system alone.
