Abstract

Aspect sensitivity at tropospheric heights measured with the vertically pointed broad antenna beam (half power beam width is 7.4°) of the new Chung‐Li VHF radar will be presented and discussed. The angular dependence of the echo power is shown to be Gaussian, and the echo power lapse rate at heights between 2 and 8 km is about 0.5 dB/deg to 1.05 dB/deg. This angular dependence levels off at approximately 4° to 10 °, depending on the heights. The observed aspect sensitivity is analyzed and related to background atmospheric parameters.
