Abstract

This paper presents a new luminaire for light-emitting diode (LED) lighting with an adjustable light pattern. The luminaire contains secondary optics and a surface-structured diffuser to spread the light pattern to fit a specified illumination area. The structured surface with a micro-lens array can be filled with index-matching liquid so that the lighting pattern is adjustable. A detailed simulation is presented for both optical efficiency and variation of the light pattern with variation of the refractive index of used liquid, and a corresponding experiment is demonstrated.
