Abstract

This paper proposes an active user-side solution, called Air Wireless Packet Detector (AWPD), which will solve the notorious evil twin problem. The evil twin problem can result in diverse security problems, such as fraud, identity theft, and man-in-the-middle attacks. We utilize the packet retransmission rules of TCP/IP protocol and packet forwarding behaviors created by evil twins to detect evil twins at public hotspots or unencrypted WLANs. Thus it does not need any data or assistant devices, and will be with a good performance.
