Abstract

Part II of this three part series compares results of a time dependeent three dimensional numerical simulation of the Hudson/Raritan Estuary with observations. Describes linear time interpolation of salinity data to obtain contours of salinity distributions which can indicate areas of unstable stratification. Agreement with the model findings on density advection instabilities is satisfactory. Compares observed tidal elevations, velocity/salinity tidal time scales/currents and energy spectra with model predictions. Examines also the subtidal response to wind forcing. Simulated tidal amplitudes and phases agree with observations. Possible model improvements are outlined. (C.J.U.)
