Abstract
To substantiate this inference regarding the global scope of the diabatic hearing effect, we propose an ξ-maintenance equation ξ = ξQ - ξHA. The value ξQ and ξHA are the contributions of vertical differential diabatic and adiabatic heating to X, respectively. The 4-yr (1979 and 1985-1987) upper-air daily data generated by the Global Date Assimilation System of the National Meteorological Center were used to compute global ξ, ξQ, and ξHA anomalies, and the global-scale ξ MJ oscillation is shown to be related to diabatic heating by HVD(= ∇2ξQ) anomalies. To understand the geographic relation between the differential diabatic heating effect and the global-scale ξ MJ oscillation, composite charts of ξ and HVD anomalies during various stages of this oscillation were constructed. Centers of positive (negative) HVD anomalies coincided with divergent (convergent) centers of ξ anomalies. -from Authors
