Abstract

Cross-layer design is proposed to facilitate network layer handover in RFC4068 fast handover mobile IPv6. However, when FMIPv6 operation enters into reactive mode or wrong handover anticipation, it will result in significant connection disruption and packet loss. Our research is focused on network layer handover issue based on IEEE 802.16e wireless network. We present an architecture which uses the idea of Binding Update in advance to accelerate FMIPv6 operation, and also uses 802.21 media independent handover services to trigger network layer handover to avoid incorrect handover prediction and reduce the transmission of signal. A simulation comparison with FMIPv6 over 802.16e is presented and a computational signal cost analysis is also performed to verify these different methods.
