Abstract

This paper describes a field assessment and evaluation of a concrete highway bridge with health monitoring instrumentation on the bridge structural elements and with a nonstationary and nonlinear time series evaluation method consisting of empirical mode decomposition and Hilbert Spectral analysis. The final decision on the health diagnostics of the bridge system depends on the nonlinear characteristics of the data, the free and the forced vibration frequencies, and the bridge response to the light load and/or the heavy load. The advantages of this method are (1) simple data collection required, (2) minimum traffic disruption, (3) precise and nuance quantitative answers. A case study was included by using this new method of analysis for structural diagnostics from health monitoring on an old damage concrete bridge.
