N2 - Traditionally, aircraft maintenance manpower supply planning in Taiwan is based on staff experience, which is neither efficient nor effective. In this research, we developed a model to help airlines to efficiently and effectively plan their maintenance manpower supplies to deal with multiple aircraft type maintenance certifications. The model is formulated as a mixed integer program which is characterized as NP-hard. Because the problem size of the proposed model was expected to be huge, we developed a heuristic algorithm to solve the problem. To evaluate the model and the solution algorithm, we performed a case study using the operating data from a Taiwan airline. The preliminary results indicate that the proposed model and the solution algorithm are both efficient and effective.
