Abstract
In this work, we investigate the 1550-nm fluorescence efficiency and heat generation of the erbium-doped fiber (EDF) pumped in the 800 nm band by pulsed (mode-locked) and quasi-continuous-wave (non-mode-locked) Ti:sapphire lasers. The result shows that the 1550-nm fluorescence power generated by anon-mode-locked laser (NMLL) can be doubled as much as that generated by amode-locked laser (MLL). Comparing EDF pump by NMLL with EDF pumped by MLL, MLL can produce higher temperature in EDF core. The increased temperature is beneficial to reduce the radiation-induced absorption of gamma-ray irradiated EDF. Therefore, it may be possible to construct an anti-irradiated superfluorescence fiber source for aerospace navigation by switching between NMLL and MLL modes.
