The Scenario Reconstruction of the Historical Tsunami Events on the Southwest Coasts of Taiwan

The southwest coast of Taiwan is densely populated, also is the place with the most historical tsunami records. Unfortunately, in Taiwan, there is no researches performing a systematically analysis on this area. In October 2015, a scientific paper from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, was published on the Journal of Geophysical Research Letters in title of "What caused the mysterious eighteenth century tsunami that struck the southwest Taiwan coast?” In that paper, a Chinese historical document, “Taiwan Interview Catalogue”,and two other historical accounts in English and in French were referred. The study concluded that the large tsunami was most likely generated by submarine mass failure on the Kaoping slope. This paper also gives a warning that a repeat event today could be truly catastrophic.This research article made a great impact and discussions in Taiwan. The arguable points might mislead and cause panic to the public. However, this article also reminded us the insufficient focuses on the historical tsunami events in Taiwan. In this project, we will gather the research power from fields of tsunami, geological, and seismology, to investigate and reconstruct the possible scenarios. We will re-collect and re-inspect the historical records, perform the tsunami impact intensity analysis (IIA) to the tsunami events, and followed by performing the COMCOT tsunami simulation. We will also develop a three dimensional model for simulating the mudslide generated tsunami, for simulating the landslide tsunamis along the southwest coast of Taiwan. Base on the systemically analysis, a better understanding on the causes of the historical events can be revealed, and the so does to the potential tsunami threat in Taiwan.
