Though temple gardens were starting quite late in the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, theywere developed rapidly due to religious propagation and the admiration of Emperors, houses were commonlyto be transferred into temples at that period. The openness on functionality and architectural philosophy leading to vast diversity on the constructionof temple gardens, showing significant influences at the time as well as in the history. Comparing to royalsand private gardens, the latecomer temple gardens were getting ahead and surpassed with their leadingposition, which set a good example for the future development of temples, especially temple gardens.Despite the lesser amount and scale of temple garden literature creation comparing to royal and privategarden literature, it presents an undeniable monumental achievement in Wei, Jin, Southern and NorthernDynasties garden literature. Temple garden literature, by virtue of the prosperous evolvement onmetaphysical poetry, which is “ingenious and highly theoretical with plain expression rather than focusing onliterary grace”, corresponding with diversified scenery description in temple garden literature andmetaphysics from Buddhism, apparently possesses particular value in the Wei, Jin, Southern and NorthernDynasties.
