Description
Mw6.4 Meinong earthquake occurred on 6th February in 2016 in southern Taiwan andresulted in 117 casualties and several building collapsed. The focal depth of this event is 14.6km without surface ruptures observed, which indicates a blind fault system. Although therewas no surface rupture observed in the field, the InSAR results show a narrow coseismicuplift with only several centimeters in the west of the epicenter and a small subsidencearound the region of the main shock. This event resulted in serious damages in Tainan city,which is more than 30 km away from the epicenter of the main shock. In order to understandthe Meinong earthquake, we proposed a detailed scientific investigation proposal to collectand analyze the geological, geochemical, and geophysical data and write a scientific report.This proposal involves 5 research institutes and includes 16 research scholars to participate.The proposal consists of (1) surface and crustal deformation; (2) seismogenic structures andseismicity; (2) strong ground motion and earthquake engineering; (3) earthquake physics andchemistry; (4) earthquake-related hazard investigation; and (5) earthquake hazard and riskassessment. To full fill the report, we also plan the field investigation work (including:earthqauke monitoring, MT, gravity, GPS, geochemistry and geological survey, etc.) to havea more completely investigation.
